Residential Development, Shobdon

A development of 10 new homes in Shobdon, Herefordshire, which draws onvernacular rural typologies to create houses that are quietly modern adopting forms that crate an environment that is reassuringly familiar.

Originally designed by Owen Hicks Architecture for speculative development, the scheme is set to the rear of an existing terrace of cottages and is laid out with three simple lines of buildings parallel and perpendicular to the sloping topography, enclosing a central courtyard. The site was subsequently sold with planning consent and developed by Harper New Homes

The houses adopt traditional pitched roof forms in simple elemental blocks. A stripped-back palette of familiar materials (brick, tile and timber) combined with subtly contemporary detailing of windows and entrances creates a comfortable and human environment.

DJD Architects were appointed to undertake technical design, resolving issues associated with the sloping site, and developing the original designs of the houses to meet the developer’s requirements.

Built to a high specification of finish, incorporating high standards of insulation and photovoltaic solar panels for sustainable energy generation, the houses should be comfortable and energy efficient.
